Devastating Earthquake 8.8 Magnitude Rocks Chile South America
A massive earthquake of magnitude 8.8 on Richter Scale, struck south-central Chile early on Saturday, 27th Feb 2010, at 3:34 AM local time. It resulted in killing hundreds of people, knocking down buildings, homes and hospitals, and triggering a tsunami. Tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii following massive earthquake in Chile.
The death toll for the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile on Saturday has already reached 700, and reports from the region suggest it will almost certainly go higher as more areas are searched.
The quake was one of the most powerful ever recorded and damage is widespread. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced emergency measures, but BBC news reported that the government appeared “totally overwhelmed,” and people were getting desperate after 48 hours without water, electricity or food. About 1.5 million homes were damaged, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless or afraid to stay in their houses.
This was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
